Objectives£ºThis study aimed 1) to investigate the associations of internet addiction with psychiatric symptoms and family environment, and 2) to evaluate the effect of family environment on the associations between internet addiction and psychiatric symptoms.
Methods£ºThe study sample consisted of 747 middle or high school students in Gwangju metropolitan city in 2001. Internet addiction was assessed by the Internet Addiction Scale(IAS). Psychiatric symptoms and family environment were measured by the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised(SCL-90-R) and the Family Environment Scale(FES), respectively.
Results£ºScores on the IAS were significantly correlated with scores on the all symptom scales of the SCL-90-R and scores on the some subscales of the FES. The associations between the scores on the IAS and the scores on the SCL-90-R were modified by the effect of the scores on the FES.
Conclusion£ºIt was suggested that the psychiatric symptoms associated with internet addiction could be handled by reconciliation and intervention of family environment.
